“Books are my treasures—the best that I’ve got.

Books are like rivers that flow through my head.

Books are like roads,” she just might have said.

“Roads that connect my old self to my new.

Unlocking our hearts to what’s noble and true.”

The story of the venerable Shakespeare and Company and its founder Sylvia Beach as told by the bookstore itself!  Sylvia had a love of life, books, and poetry, which she used to transform an old, dusty space into one of the most famous havens for readers and aspiring writers—Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Janet Flanner, James Joyce and Simone de Beauvoir to name a few.  Stories like these are some of our favorite kinds.  Anyone else ever have dreams of opening a bookstore (resident cat and all)?

Sylvia's Bookshop: The Story of Paris's Beloved Bookstore and Its Founder (As Told by the Bookstore Itself!) was written by Robert Burleigh, illustrated by Katy Wu and published by Paula Wiseman Books.  It’ll be out soon on September 25.

“The big world we live in is smaller than you think.”

In her newest book, Rachel Ignotofsky takes readers on a sweeping tour of the earth that spans its five continents, its ecosystems and their inhabitants.   Readers learn about different cycles of nature, the importance of biodiversity, how humans have impacted the planet and measures we can take to protect it.  Included in the book’s back matter are a glossary, sources and an index.

Ever since she published Women in Science, we have been in awe of how Rachel Ignotofsky uses art to educate and in so doing, expands readers’ views of history, science, the world, its diverse people and walks of life.

The Wondrous Workings of Planet Earth: Understanding Our World and Its Ecosystems was written and illustrated by Rachel Ignotofsky and published by Ten Speed Press.  It’ll be out soon on September 18.

One of our favorite harbingers of the season — books drenched in glorious leafy fall foliage!  The art and text of SWEEP, brilliant on their own, work together ingeniously and humorously in this story about Ed’s bad mood and how it snowballs into a cataclysmic mess.  It’s a perfect visual reference (some would call it a paragon) to show kids what happens when we give into a grumpy mood little by little, its dreadful downward spiral and how that affects others around us.

Sweep was written by Louise Greig, illustrated by Júlia Sardà and published by Egmont.

This one is for those with cats in their lives.  Their odd, idiosyncratic habits simultaneously annoy, intrigue, charm and amuse you.  It’s a complex nuanced relationship.  And you wouldn’t have it any other way.  Cat lovers/haters, this one is for you.  Remembering its pages and still laughing inside as I type.  I Hate My Cats: A Love Story is clever, comical and hits all the right notes.

I Hate My Cats (A Love Story) was written by Davide Cali, illustrated by Anna Pirolli and published by Chronicle Books.  It’ll be out soon on October 2.
