Recently, Avery has started telling Nate stories with story books. She uses the pictures to help her remember what happened. This is a great way for them to wind down before a nap or bedtime, and also a nice way for them to spend time together. Avery gets to practice her narrative skills (telling or retelling stories) and Nate gets more exposure to vocabulary and different sentence structures, which is important for language development. One more benefit: we, as parents, get a quiet break from the clamor and commotion of the busy day. Last night, while telling Nate a story, I overheard Avery say, "They went to the beach with the lovely water." So sweet!
